With the owner's overall goal of improved behavior in the house and off leash obedience, we placed Bell the Saint Bernard in our 4 week Board and Train program. We first examined her diet and exercise regime for any links to the hyperactive behavior. We did not find any nutritional links that could be causing this behavior however Bell was receiving less than adequate structured exercise do to her poor behavior on walks and large size.
We began her program by increasing her exercise and using food rewards to train over 15 new commands. We used the place command as our main command to teach calmness in the home with distractions. Toward the end of her program we introduced a remote collar to progress to off leash obedience in busy public spaces.
At our 2 week follow up lesson with the family after the board and train program, the client is happy with the progress Bell has made. She is no longer running through the house and knocking into the children. Instead the owners are utilizing the place command regularly to maintain calmness inside and outside of their home and Bell is now an enjoyed part of the family and is no longer spending her time behind locked gates. The clients are also walking Bell more frequently now that she is able to maintain a loose leash on walks and walking her has become a breeze.
Now the clients are enjoying their life with their Saint Bernard without the worry that their large dog is going to accidentally injure a child due to her size and hyperactive behavior.
